Where am i at for security and hunting

I have sold off my russian rifles. And replaced with a

Mossberg 535 tactical

http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/p ... gun&r=view

Kel tec sub 2000 9mm ( I went with this due to the ability to fold in half and throw in a bookbag and keep a low profile.)

http://www.keltecweapons.com/our-guns/rifles/sub-2000/

and a standard Marlin 22 cal

and how many 00 buckshot should i have on hand.

If you are interested in hunting, having a .308 or 30-06 with a good scope would be highly beneficial.

You can hunt with all 3, but requires you to get pretty close with both the shotgun and 9mm, and giving most post collapse scenarios expect the game in the area to be decimated, and what is left will be incredibly skittish. So you need range, lots of it.

ferFAL (from Argentina) says the gun you need most in a collapsed society is a concealable handgun.
I've given up on waiting for other people to get it. Now I'm waiting for it to get them.

I would want at least 500 rds. of buckshot and slugs and I would prefer 1000 rds. 00 buckshot is nice, but so is #1 or #4 buckshot(higher pellet count).I would also want to keep one of the Russian rifles, maybe two (SKS and Mosin-Nagant).

If you plan on hunting to survive you will most likely starve.Farming would produce more food with less time and effort.Fishing and trapping would produce more meat than hunting.Of course I would shoot a deer standing in my corn or turnip green patch in a second and the same goes for wild pigs.Hunting is a very unrelible way to put meat on the table.

Get additional barrels (rifled, water fowl) for the shotgun. Make the most use out of it. There are a lot of Ohioans out there who bag a buck every year using a rifled shotgun.

My .02 cents, get a good mix of ammo. And go shooting!

This is a huge grey area, it really depends where you live and the amount of game around you. I live in Western Canada where wild animals are almost as plentiful as the human ones. While I agree that you should not rely on hunting for sustenance, you would be silly to remove it as an option for long term survival. Also, it depends on the quality of hunter you are. I have an older brother who every year fulfills all his tags like clockwork. The man is a born hunter and he is exceptional at it.

I think if you plan on growing your own food and hunting for it you will be safer if you rely on either one 100%.

Like the wonderful hailstorm that obliterated my garden this year reminded me.

It's all about redundancy.

You said it Templar,"decimated,and...skittish".Even wolves and big cats only make one kill a week, two if they are lucky, and eat a lot of mice and frogs in between.

Wolves and cats don't have rifles that can reach out and touch someone at 600 yards.

I to live in a remote area in the adirondacks where wildlife is abundant. the last year i have also become familiar with over thirty wild plant edibles, and the process of how to prepare them. I never planned to live off of hunting or wild edibles, but it is good knowledge to have in the event of crop failure, drought, etc. To the comments about long distance rifles, up here there is over 3 million acres of dense woodland, with the sporadic hay and corn field that is usually never larger than 50-150 yards. I figured that distance would be a non issue.
