What is Peak Oil - A Challenge

In an attempt to give more people an introduction to peak oil and what this forum is all about, I figured it was time we have an introduction to peak oil to be created. If any of you remember the long introduction on LATOC, I am looking for something like that. I want people finding The Oil Age for the first time to know what we are about without having to look through the forums and getting in over their head before they have even begun to fully understand the spirit of the site.

Now here is the challenge to the community.

We would like a primer of sorts to be the front page of our forum here and wan't to open it up to you the community to create it.

So we have decided to hold a contest of sorts, the winner who writes the best intro description will receive a "VIP" badge on their account along with a Avatar designed by myself to your specifications.

I will be closing submissions On January 31st, at which point the submissions will be pondered over and a winner will be selected by the admins.

Once selection is complete the admin team will go through it and ensure it's ready for the new main page we are building. (Spelling, grammar and the such)

After completion a new forum will be created to facilitate updating and additions to it based on changing conditions regarding peak oil.

Please submit all submission to myself via PM for consideration. If pictures are used in the writeup, just include a link to them.

By submitting a article for consideration you agree to allow perpetual use of the article by the Oil Age, either in its original form, or changed however we see fit in perpetuity. This is just to keep it domain of the Oil Age and it's posters ownership.
Definition of Irony: Posting on a forum saying you don't need community.

agreed, but that piece probably changed more peoples lives then any piece written on the subject.

truely a PO seminole effort.
I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love,
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.

I think the challenge is on for us to continue the effort. We need to collectively compile something of that caliber. Id say shoot for 20 pages to start, and then we can add more detail as time goes on. This is intended to be something that grows and changes. If what you submit is only 7 or 10 pages it makes no difference, we can always add to it. I think around 20 pages will be the final goal before it goes live on the site.

Re: What is Peak Oil - A Challenge

A pretty good idea. :)

But i kinda thought the challenge would be for thread contributors to write a brief "What is Peak Oil" in a single post.

There are books out there already. Wikipedia's PO entry is nothing to sneeze at (and if it is, we can fix it!).

Either way,,,,,, either way, hurray for TOA! :D

Go for it! However I think we are all going to be living it very soon anyway so telling the public the real deal is coming is going to be mute! I thank all here for your efforts and even Matt at LATOC who gave me a 5 year lead on heads up.And that's what this forum is all about. Giving people a fighting chance to help themselves as well others when the SHTF which is very soon with the conditions at hand.

Any way you want to contribute is fine. If you want to write up something that explains it in a brief post go for it! We definantly want it to eventually morph into something that is convincing enough on its own. But that is something that can happen over time. We will also compile links to supporting websites and resources to give people a roadmap to learn about the topic.

Re: What is Peak Oil - A Challenge

well...

Peak oil is the point in time when the maximum rate of global petroleum extraction is reached, after which the rate of production enters terminal decline.

That's from Wikipedia --
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil

Here's a simpler version--

"It's like you look out your window on a winters day and see you only got four cords of fire wood and a millenium or more of cold weather yet to go." ;)

and you turn to your smart (allek) dinner guest and ask:
"How many civilizations on earth had a decline and collapse?"
He answers: "All of them."
