US gas prices last month highest ever for January

Forget the weather, forget AAPL, forget American Idol, forget Greece, forget the Middle East, forget inventories, forget USD strength, forget the SPR, and forget the implicit tax cut we 'received' in Q4 from low gas prices... the average gasoline price in the US was the highest ever for January - is it any wonder that retail sales disappointed? So as we all await the tax-cut extension to pass, perhaps we should remember just how big a chunk of our consumer-spending bias is anchored from the starting point of our energy needs and seasonals will do nothing to help this time, like it did in Q4.[Two charts follow]

Price of gas in my neighborhood has gone up 32 cents in past 3 weeks or so. And looking at the situation, I wouldn't be surprised to see February reach the same distinction as has January.

It's the big squeeze on the middle class! At 5.00 dollars a gallon the used trucks will pile up at the auto lots with a huge discount while classic car dealers go out of business!Electrical rates will climb as coal plants get shut down and carbon taxes kick in. Everything will go up but food will be the big surprise soon enough!

We drove from Western Massachusetts up through Vermont and New York yesterday. Here, gas was $3.53. Further north it was $3.82. Then I saw on the news last night that California was $4.80. One fellow with a huge SUV said it was costing $160.00 to fill his tank. It was hard to feel sorry for him. I will say that we took the drive to pick up beekeeping supplies as the price the company charges for shipping is high in any case and we had about 200 pounds of product to get so driving was cheaper. But we did talk about what we could do to reduce road time. It's hard to figure where to cut. We are both home full-time and we live in a place where we can walk nearly every place we need to go.

But this is as high as Gas Prices are going.

I mean, it's coming down to charging One Person a million dollars for
gasoline, to make up for the rest who aren't buying anymore.

Gasoline Usage is falling off a cliff.

And final Xmas Retail #'s are in, and they were a disaster.

According to Commerce Department data, January's auto sales grew over December's. According to just released retail sales data - which came in at just half the expected increase - auto sales were the weakest part of the overall 0.4% growth. December's retail sales were revised sharply downward, to a -0.5%. Note, too, that the unadjusted decrease of $98.5 billion in sales was the biggest one month drop in retail sales history. A new world order upper middle class is buying all the energy now! That leaves me out in the cold as I am diluted by the sheer/shear numbers. :cry:

This solves nothing in the long run to sustain our current population so a world war is the answer as our fearless leaders run to the bomb shelter to come out will the herd as been culled by stupidity and political propaganda spewed out to the mindless masses!

There are several "rumors" about the cause of the spike in gas prices.

1) the Koch brothers are speculating on oil futures to pay for the campaign pledges to overthrow Obama.

2) Oil companies are trying to recoup lost profits from the warmer than usual winter decreasing heating oil purchases.

3) The right wing wants to crash the economy before the election so that they can blame Obama and win in November. Gas at $5.00 a gallon will crash the economy. BTW, corporations are awash in cash in record amounts, yet they have not hired workers. How much do you want to bet that if a Repuke is elected President, the corporations will start hiring and the Sheeple will kiss the Repukes asses because they saved the economy, not like that Keynesian Kenyan in the White House now.

Yes. It is.

And who raises prices as Demand is falling off a cliff.
Note that Petroleum itself is not anywhere near setting
any new records.
