A well stocked pantry and jugs and jugs of water, batteries and all the Ready.org items multiplied by however much you can afford is great insurance as well.

This.

Conversely, cities have larger incomes. This income afford better outcomes when it's time to 'bug out \ retire'. For me, the best combination is to hold a decent job in a city, with ~6months supply of food(plus a fuel tank) and stockpile financial resources for land purchases. Many properties 2-3 hours out of cities are held as holiday homes (hobby farms, etc) and will become priced far lower as SHTF approaches.

Plus this.

That's my current "operating procedure," I guess you could call it. Keep the day job and pay bills, and save whatever I can for a land purchase, plus getting preps. I just hope things hold together for another year or two, ideally three, so I can get it all together. That's my current time frame.

Swampman, EXCELLENT points. What trigger event would make sense for someone living in or close to the city, to move to a bug-out place?

Thought I would revive this thread, for discussion

There's a new kindle book available on Amazon---"A Distant Eden", that provides some useful insights into a fast crash, including hiding in urban environments. For 99 cents it's probably worth your while to read. The particular fast crash is a replay of the Carrington event.
