The End of U.S. Hegemony and Imperialism

Nuclear arsenal, troop numbers may shrink in U.S. military plan
By Agence France-presse, Calgary Herald January 6, 2012 4:34 AM

President Barack Obama laid out a new strategy Thursday for a "leaner" U.S. military that calls for a high-tech force with fewer ground troops and a greater focus on countering a rising China.

The revised strategy is supposed to shape budget priorities as the Pentagon prepares to cut $487 billion from planned spending levels over the next decade.

The highlights of the "defence strategic review":

Ground forces scaled back:

After 10 years of waging counter-insurgency operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, the strategy calls for an end to vast nation-building missions and slashing the size of the army and the Marine Corps.

The army is already planning to cut back to 520,000 active duty troops from 565,000 after 2014, and many analysts say the number could drop below 500,000. The Marine Corps, which has swelled to 202,000, has plans to drop to 186,000, but may be asked to shrink further.

The new strategy suggests reducing the U.S. military presence in Europe, where about 43,000 service members are stationed, mostly in Germany, saying it will "evolve" although no details were provided. Defense officials say at least one army combat brigade, about 3,500 troops, could be eliminated in Europe.

The effect of the strategy may put the ground forces at a similar level to that before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. In August 2001, the army had 482,000 troops and the Marine Corps was at 173,000. The U.S. has a total of 1.4 million men and women in uniform, compared to China's 2.3 million and 1.1 million troops in North Korea.

Nuclear arsenal reduced:

"It is possible that our deterrence goals can be achieved with a smaller nuclear force," the Pentagon's strategy document says.

The Pentagon has yet to reveal any details of a possible cutback to the atomic arsenal, but some lawmakers have proposed reducing the fleet of 14 nuclear-armed submarines.

End of the two-war doctrine:

The new strategy abandons the much-debated doctrine of preparing to fight two wars at the same time. Instead, the U.S. would be able to wage a large-scale conflict in one region while conducting a holding action elsewhere. The military would be "capable of denying the objectives of - or imposing unacceptable costs on - an opportunistic aggressor in a second region," the document says.

A defence budget without equal:

Obama pointed out the military's budget will still "be larger than roughly the next 10 countries combined."

While obviously not exactly a 5th century Romulus Augustus, 21st century Barack Obama has officially sounded the trumpets, and the empire is collapsing.

Re: The End of U.S. Hegemony and Imperialism

How is a re-orientation toward confronting Iran and China a "retreat"? Wishful thinking, Russ. This is in fact preparation for global war. The day the US retreats from its empire is the day the US branch of TPTB will become TPTW (W= were), and if you think these people will voluntarily do that, i'd like some of what you're smoking.

Never in the history of the U.S. military has such a massive reduction of troops and spending been FORCED by Congress.

Re: The End of U.S. Hegemony and Imperialism

This is NOT a reduction of spending, Russ, it just won't grow as fast as it has been, it's a mere reduction in the rate of growth. Obama made this clear in his remarks yesterday, also noting the Pentagon budget will end up higher than it was in the last year of Bush. And it's not a matter of "playing the world's policeman," a liberal BS description of the situation, it's empire maintenance. Like i said, without an empire the American branch of TPTB is kaput. You can dream all you want that they will commit suicide, but it won't happen.

A picture is worth 1,000 words, great find Russ!

I agree, we have no more money to fund empire. Reduction will happen, willingly, or not.

Money for domestic spending will be eliminated before the empire is abandoned. They will not allow slow motion attrition, long before that happens you will see a much-expanded war.

.

- Also keep in mind that there's a rather sneaky transition from US Military to "contractors"... The empire gets around a lot of its own rules that way.

Re: The End of U.S. Hegemony and Imperialism

Oh that makes sense, we can't afford to pay the bullet catching enlisted grunts, so we'll pay "contractors" 3 times as much?

Also funny that you think removing troops from Europe, mostly Germany, for the first time since Normandy, is strategic.

I bet you have also convinced yourselves that the Soviets are becoming less powerful as the price of their most exported commodity continues to rise.

We are fucking broke! This is not opinion, ask our credit agency's!

The Soviets? The Soviet Union is history. I know it's only been 20 years, Russ, but i'd thought you'd realize it by now.
See the thread on Obama's global war strategy for the details. This is a redeployment to the Asia Pacific Theater, where the action is.

Re: The End of U.S. Hegemony and Imperialism

Russia's Putin dreams of sweeping Eurasian Union
By PETER LEONARD, Associated Press – 5 days ago

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) — Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has a vision for a Soviet Union-lite he hopes will become a new Moscow-led global powerhouse. But, his planned Eurasian Union won't be grounded in ideology: This time it's about trade.

Russia has moved one step toward this goal under an agreement with former fellow Soviet republics Belarus and Kazakhstan that as of Sunday allows the free movement of goods and capital across their common borders.

As Putin envisions it, the still-hypothetical union will eventually stretch from the eastern fringes of Central Europe to the Pacific Coast and south to the rugged Pamir Mountains abutting Afghanistan.

The drive to reform at least a husk of the Soviet Union has been around since 1991.

In anticipation of a new six-year term as president, Putin has made forming a Eurasian Union by 2015 a foreign policy priority. He is promoting the union as necessary for Russia and its neighbors to compete in the modern global economy. His broader goal is to restore some of Moscow's economic and political clout across former Soviet space and thus strengthen Russia's position in the world.

Moscow issued lines of credit and then sold countries oil, gas, electricity and military hardware at discount prices. That strategy has brought Russia closer to gaining control over energy infrastructure in Ukraine, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan.

Current President Almazbek Atambayev has made it clear he sees the fate of Kyrgyzstan, which hosts a U.S. air base that acts as a crucial transportation hub for military operations in Afghanistan, as very much tied to Russia.

Do you really think they are happy with what the U.S. and the Sauds did to help that happen?

Maybe having a reduced overall population, therefore less entitlements, and a smaller less costly military has saved them a few rubles?
