I think a few basics for a bug-out bag are needed too Templar. Depending on where you are going, how long it will take, and what you believe you may encounter on the way, the size and contents of a B.O.B. will vary. Also, bear in mind the physical limitations of you and the members of your group. Are you able to grab that giant rucksack of supplies and hoof it 5-10 miles if the truck breaks down?
Instead of specifics, because each item could be covered using a variety of methods, you need:
- Food and water, and a way to purify water during your journey.
- Some form of shelter from the elements (i.e. clothing, tent/sleeping bags, etc.).
- Basic tools (for creating impromptu shelters or clearing obstacles while bugging-out).
- Some form of defensive capability (knives, firearms, etc.).
- Medical supplies for you and your group.
Also, I don't hear this mentioned often, but it might be a good idea to bring along important documents and papers. While TEOTWAWKI might make your tax returns pointless to hang on to, if you're evacuating temporarily (i.e. natural disasters), it might be a good idea to bring them along if you expect to be returning and for things to get back to normal. Same goes for family heirlooms or other possessions which cannot be easily replaced.
The whole point of a B.O.B. is to get you from Point A to Point B. While you could effectively bring everything including the kitchen sink, it would be far better to be in your retreat location to begin with. However, if you pre-position the majority of your supplies at your retreat, then a B.O.B. just has to get you there.
