REVERBERATIONS: A CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Sept. 26th, sparking one of the strongest magnetic storms in years. At the peak of the Kp=8 disturbance, auroras were sighted around both poles and more than half a dozen US states including Michigan, New York, South Dakota, Maine, Massachusetts and Minnesota. Magnetic reverberations continued for more than 48 hours. Here is the view from forests of Skibotn, Norway, two days after the CME impact:

Sky watchers at the highest latitudes should remain alert for auroras as Earth's magnetic field remains unsettled on Sept. 29th.

COMET AND CME: A comet discovered by amateur astronomers on Friday, Sept. 30th, disintegrated in spectacular fashion the very next day when it plunged into the sun. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory recorded the comet's last hours. The end was punctuated by an unexpected explosion; click on the image to set the scene in motion: http://spaceweather.com/images2011/03oc ... strip2.jpg

The timing of the CME so soon after the comet dove into the sun suggests a link. But what? There is no known mechanism for comets to trigger solar explosions. Before 2011 most solar physicists would have discounted the events of Oct. 1st as pure coincidence--and pure coincidence is still the most likely explanation. Earlier this year, however, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) watched another sungrazer disintegrate in the sun's atmosphere. On July 5, 2011, the unnamed comet appeared to interact with plasma and magnetic fields in its surroundings as it fell apart. Could a puny comet cause a magnetic instability that might propagate and blossom into a impressive CME? The question is not so crazy as it once seemed to be.

The most reasonable approach would be to decommission all nuclear plants and put alternative clean energies in their place. This way, when a solar storm comes, for the first time in history we will be prepared to confront the challenges. A best case scenario will play out- no one will die or be injured and no chaos will ensue- all because we chose to stand up and prepare.

ok I read the post - lots of good info, but this stood out as a bit naive.

i work in the green field - for 20 years - i permit large scale facilities - if you had 2 billion dollars in the bank - you would come to a guy like me to permit your project.

i "see" most all the behind the scenes...green is a ponsi...not scalable - and utilities don't want it on their wires.

ito nuke plants - it still takes a massive amount of energy to keep waste cool. we will face our own fuk...in the not too distant future.

now - back to the article.

what is mot mentioned is EMPs or man made CMEs.

when the grid dies - you would not ever know if it were an emp or a cme...the effect would be identical.

and if i wanted to destroy the JIT system in a matter of seconds - to starve 300 million - so that the chinese can collect the money that is owed (now I am getting a little too tinny)...i would detonante an emp over washington, kansas, and LA.

300 million gone in 30 days.

this could easily be scheduled by the power brokers - spare transformers would be pulled out of storage...plug and play with an empty country.

Re: Sunspot Activity

Roccman,
From talking to various folks that work in power engineering for the Corps of Engineers and the like, I don't think there ARE any spare transformers to speak of to pull out of storage. Certainly not enough to repair or rebuild after such an event. From a bit more questioning (my own background, while in Electrical and Computer engineering, never had more than a minor in Power), I can surmise that it would probably be possible to jury rig a vastly diminished power grid without said transformers, as in the past many long haul lines ran at only 10-20KV instead of the >100KV that is the norm today. This greatly limits how much power you can transmit through the lines (because of I^2R heating losses and the limits of such on the line) along with greatly reducing efficiency. Assuming that everything went right and a lot of initiative was on display, you might be able to supply about 1/10 of the power of today's grid.
It is an ugly potential, ugly enough that the House actually passed a bill to buy a bunch of spares, but it died in the Senate.

Russ, I don't remember if I posted this stuff before, but it shows that there is a known mechanism for comets to interact with the sun.
