Shelter: Tiny Homes

Wanted to see what you all thought about the Small House Movement, which focuses on building human-sized, livable structures which are more than just a shelter or a house. They're def. no McMansions, they blend in and actually look like they belong within their environment, and most importantly, they're sustainable.

Also included in this are houses small enough to be built upon trailers and moved to different locations - mobility, something I think is a vital advantage since we don't know what areas will be safe once collapse comes - i.e., climate change, nuclear disasters, flooding, etc.

Of course, these are obviously not meant to be replacements for a full-on homestead/doomstead (since there is a lack of storage), but I am considering something along the lines of a small house until I can find suitable land for building an actual homestead.

I think it's great, and fun all at the same time.

Try to get a zoning exception sometime.

It's dead on the starting line.

As far as I know, in some municipalities there are no zoning rules/regs regarding homes under a certain square footage, and in some instances no building permit is required if under a certain square footage. If it's on a trailer there are no restrictions either, and if anyone asks just say it's only for camping and not a permanent residence.

- People seriously need to break the habit of asking the little tin gods for permission.

- Neat-o little cabins. A lot of potential there.

- Of course, the tradition in the Deep South tended toward much bigger structures, especially in the pre-Cornucopian days... It's actually easier to keep a big place with a high ceiling tolerable in the Summer sans AC. And heating wasn't a huge concern with the short, mild Winters.

Re: Shelter: Tiny Homes

for a book on how to build the earth housing,
go to soilandhealth.org
go to the personal sovereignty library,
go to homesteading
go to the last on on the page,
they will email you a link to download the book for free
I would direct link, but they don't let you do that.
I have that book in paper form and it is great,
makes me want to build one.

Re: Shelter: Tiny Homes

that is the thing with them, they don't take much to build,
they are one of the lowest price things to make
but the old thing I can't help with

I don't need anything huge, just a little home to call my own. I think a large plantation mansion would be too much for my needs.

And I love Earth-Bag homes. They're not hard or too expensive. Only problem is getting the land to build them on, which is my dilemma. No land. Need to work on that.

Re: Shelter: Tiny Homes

So many of the decisions I make right now are based on
1) lack of money (I'm swimming as fast as I can, but still seem to be going under :( )
2) my Grandmother ( I have to stay where I live right now.... for her. She will not move, and I will not leave her... we are BOTH stubborn)
She will be 98 on the 8th of July! I swear she is going to outlive me!

Logistically, it is just not practical for me to try to build one of those little houses at this point in my life. But it is still an option for the future. I like options 8-)
