Ruger makes a 1911

Maybe this should be in Breaking News. The best gun company in America now makes the best handgun in America. It's everyone's dream come true. And they got it EXACTLY right.

The single-action .45 Auto Ruger SR1911 features a bead-blasted stainless steel frame and slide, precision CNC machined for a precise slide-to-frame fit. The stainless steel barrel and bushing are produced simultaneously, from the same ordnance-grade barstock, for a precise fit and improved accuracy. The slide features rear cocking serrations and a dovetailed three-dot sight system with a Novak® rear sight and standard front sight.

“We are very proud to offer a 1911 pistol, an icon of American gun design and manufacturing,” said Ruger CEO Michael Fifer. “In this 100-anniversary year of the introduction of the Government Model 1911 it is only fitting that such a firearm be completely manufactured in America with all American-made components.”

The Ruger SR1911 pistol features a titanium firing pin and heavy firing pin spring, which negates the need for a firing pin block, offering an updated safety feature to the original “Series 70″ design without compromising trigger pull weight. An extended thumb safety offers improved manipulation and an oversized beavertail grip safety provides positive function and reliability. A visual inspection port offers visual confirmation of a round in the chamber.

Positive extraction is facilitated by an improved internal extractor. The plunger tube for both the slide stop and thumb safety is integral to the frame and will never shoot loose. The swedged link pin also will not shoot loose. The SR1911 uses a skeletonized hammer and an aluminum, skeletonized trigger with an adjustable over-travel stop. The Ruger SR1911 features a standard recoil guide system and flat mainspring housing.

The Ruger SR1911 grips feature a Ruger logo in checkered hardwood panels. Each pistol is shipped with one 7-round and one 8-round stainless steel magazine, bushing wrench and a soft case. The SR1911 will fit currently available holsters.

Re: Ruger makes a 1911

I instinctively like the 1911. And everyone (except for everyone that I know) swears that they are not finicky jam-o-matics. I just find distateful the idea that I pay for a weapon, and then have to pay again to have it fixed. The best one I ever had was a box stock Springfield Armory. Every one that was "racegunned" or even touched by a gunsmith at all was a kludge.

For $800, it might work out of the box like a Sig or HK (H&K: "Because you suck, and we hate you."). Or a Glock and a case of ammo to practice with.

My 17,19 and 21 were carried for years and my 21 took over 50,000 rounds and was sweated on, bled on, blown up with a squib round, puked on (long story) and dropped off of a building (longer story). And the thing just flat out ran.

Re: Ruger makes a 1911

$800

Yeah, and that's a steal for what it is. Springfield Armory Inc wants something like $1050 for their equivalent version (a stainless Loaded) and the only real extra you get is an ambidextrous safety. That's not worth $200 IMO. I see the Rugers on Gunbroker for $700 in some cases, new in box.

Really, I'm only hesitating because 1) there are currently more important purchases to make and 2) it might be a good idea to wait until they've been out for a few months or a year to work out any kinks they might have. It's not like the 1911 hasn't been in constant production for more than 100 years, and it's not like Ruger doesn't know how to make guns, but I still think there could possibly be some issues.

My 17,19 and 21 were carried for years and my 21 took over 50,000 rounds and was sweated on, bled on, blown up with a squib round, puked on (long story) and dropped off of a building (longer story). And the thing just flat out ran.

Yeah, it's hard to knock Glocks, except that they feel like a 2x3 in the hand and don't have a manual safety for peace of mind. And they look like crap. Alas, if I had to have only one handgun in a long-term doom scenario, it'd probably have to be a Glock; even though an HK might run as well as a Glock, they're more complicated and harder to find parts for.

But who the hell would want to collect Glocks? Well, who in their right mind?

I'm approaching the Ruger as a collector's piece (but one I'll be totally comfortable shooting the hell out of). I know it probably wouldn't be as reliable with mud and gunk as a GI-issue Colt, but hey, I can get one of those too someday.

If I could I'd have one of these.

You're not located in the US, so you can be forgiven ;) The appeal of a 1911 with both "Made in USA" and "Ruger" stamped on the side is something I just can't pass up.

Me! If I could I'd have a 17L for the range, 34 for practical comps and a 36 for EDC... I have the Glock 78 field knife and the Glock shovel. Also Glock ear defenders and a Glock baseball cap... The Glock sticker on my toolbox at work disturbs people.

Re: Ruger makes a 1911

That's not a $500 gun, that's a RIA match pistol. Perhaps equivalent to the Ruger, but it's not stainless, and that does matter with corrosion.

I can't believe it was under $500 new for a match; maybe it's more of a GI with a different hammer and beavertail grip safety. Look on gunbroker and you'll see that an ordinary GI-style RIA 1911 sells for the prices he's talking about, but not the match ones. The match ones are toward $700, being better fitted, with stuff like checkering, the hammer and grip safety I mentioned, and more accurate, though less tolerant of gunk in them.

Maybe he did get that one for under $500 but it's because the dealer made a mistake or it's not actually brand new even though they said it is.
