Re: Recipes: Baked Goods

I know it's been a long time, but I have...well, for me, anyways.... a HUGE initiation / confession / I just don't know what to call it

Like I said previously here in this thread... I don't really do sweet baked goods. I am horrible at it.

But today... after years and years of wanting to make pie pastry from scratch.... I went to the local grocery store...

drum roll.....

with my daughter....

and I sang along to the christmas opera loudly (my daughter has stopped being so embarrassed of me. hhaaha)... and I had to ask an attendant...

"excuse me, but where could i find some lard?)

I am going to learn how to make pie crust. I will hopefully eventually make my own lard... the old-fashioned (help, please?)... and then I bought some WHITE flour. I don't think I have ever done that. I felt as though I was almost commiting a sin. Isn't that pathetic

It's all in my childhood "training" I guess...

And I figured if i can buy a pie, then I should know how to make one.

But no sweety pies for me... just meat pies.

I am laughing along with my kid, because she just told me I should open a restaurant... she loves my cooking, bless her, and she thinks the restaurant should feature food from around the world. She told me I should ask patrons, in her words, "In what country would you like to dine tonight?"

It makes me think Thai Pie  That would be pretty interesting. I'll post the recipe once I invent it, OK?

Tomorrow I want to make a basic chicken and vegetable pie.
Can anyone help me? I don't know how to make good pie crust. I am a total newbie here. HELP! :D

Re: Recipes: Baked Goods

1 lb of crisco
1 egg
3 tblsp vinegar
5 cups flour
3 tblsp brown sugar
2/3 cup water

1) blend crisco and flour
2) beat together egg, brown sugar, vinegar and water
3) add egg mixture to flour mixture
4) mix together ( loving hands are always the best)
5) wrap in foil and store in frig until used, or freeze

should result in 4-6 shells

OK... a friend sent me this recipe... i like the loving hands part... i am surprised that there is sugar in the recipe... is this normal for a savory pie? I have zero intuition for this... but i can make a spicy mean pad thai noodle dinner... the baking gene was missing when i was born

OH! i almost forgot... do you have to cook the bottom shell first and then add the filling?

Re: Recipes: Baked Goods

Wish I could help Alli, but I have trouble making stuff in the bakery at work! Can't follow directions or some such, but this week has been HELL for me!

Glad I have the next two days off, I'm so burned out, I was going to start slapping people.

Hhhaaaaaa! I am glad you have some time off. I have had almost 6 months off... I think that's what's driving me to buy LARD.

No... seriously, I have made good use of my time. Have a good time off! Or time out?

Something like that. I am finding it harder and harder to "be a good, obedient worker" in this society. I need a way out, soon.

Any ideas on that one? I'm thinking of continuing to sell off / give away more stuff and go live on a sailboat.
