It feels like economic collapse is very near and even though I've been trying to understand what this means for a long time I still have a really hard time trying to grasp how this will play out. The government may try to put some more band aids on mortal wounds but I think we are coming to a time when that will not keep the illusion of BAU propped up much longer. --then what?

That right there is the million dollar question, or in our modern world the trillion dollar question (Even cliches are seeing record inflation). I try to tell the people around me, that when doom hits it will be from an unexpected source and even if it is from an expected source it will happen in an unexpected way.

I firmly believe the collapse will be semi controlled until food supplies get interrupted as civilization is only 2 weeks away from anarchy if people don't get to eat. So I watch all the daily news with great interest, but it's the stories regarding food that really get my attention. It's also the same reason when people ask me what they should do to prep, I tell them "Get food and when you have food, get more. Tell Nobody." It may not see you survive, but it will give you a hell of a better chance than without.

Though, I honestly feel there is a false flag in the works.... They need to kick this dog and pony show into high gear and to effectively do that they need to throw nations into war. Nothing like making a profit on population reduction. It will be the ultimate final hurrah of capitalism. I just don't know who they are going to make the bad guy.

I hear you, and EarthGirl too. Dealing with all this is 'huge!' A few things have been the most helpful for me. One is Carolyn Baker's books, "Sacred Demise" and "Navigating the Coming Chaos; another is Transition Towns; another is going to Tom Brown Jr's Tracker school (primitive skills + I rediscovered and deepened a passion for learning about wild edible foods).

A funny thing about getting in touch with the reality of 'collapse' is that you eventually come to realize that it is what life is and has always been about. We all die and we never know when that will be. We all suffer to various degrees and it usually has nothing to do with whether we are 'good' people or whether we make 'good or bad' decisions. Life happens and at anytime things can go terribly wrong. By confronting this we can learn to be present in ways most people rarely experience.
That's why we call the people who are not aware, who refuse to be aware, Zombies.

Life is so much more precious now because I understand that all I have is this moment.

It is a difficult journey. Hang in there.

From Occupy Wall Street Thread: Breaking News, by Picasso Moon!

Picasso Moon wrote:I got back from the occupied Port of Oakland recently. Here's my account.

After a rather trying morning, i finally got to 14th and Broadway around 2PM. As i walked out of the BART station onto the street, i ran right away into a huge street party. A large group was standing on Broadway with many banners and even a pair of huge balloons holding up one such banner. Ran into a friend and his son, didn't think there was a chance i'd find them but there they were. I was looking for the anti-capitalism march, turned out i was right in it. We soon left, it swelled further and further, i would guess 3000 people, walked to the bank/corporate buildings part of downtown, near Lake Merrit, with a "black bloc" of some 40-50 people at its head. A bunch of windows at some of the banks got smashed, the branches all shut down. On a main cathedral, someone spray painted along the protection wall "No Gods, No Masters." The heaviest action was at Whole Foods, which told its employees that they would be fired if they took the day off. A whole bunch of windows got smashed. Later, i heard there were bullet holes in the windows, coming from the INSIDE. Don't know if it was cops or security guards. The march then wound it way along Lake Merrit back to 14th and Broadway. At one point, a would be monitor yelled at us "Do you realize you're following the black bloc?" She was jeered by a bunch of people, as if we were too stupid to understand what was what.

Ran into more people i knew at 14th and Broadway. Soon after, the first march left for the port, after taking a while to gather. This was far larger than the first march, up to 10,000. I kept being amazed how many people were ahead and behind. And a huge variety, age wise, racial/ethnic groups, "straights," "queers,"..... Large groups, families, individuals,...About the most diverse march i've ever been too. Very high energy. And lots of very aware people, lots with explicitly anti-capitalist signs, lots of anarchists, even a group of young anarchists who were situationist-informed. By the time we got to the ramp going into the Port of Oakland, it was obvious that there was no way to keep the port open. Trucks were just standing on the roadway, most truckers honked their horns in support. One guy revved up his engine as if to ram his way, but then noticed how many people were in front of him, how many were coming up, and desisted. Large pickets were set up at the gates, i joined the one at the APL line, the port's largest gate. After a while, i started walking back, and ran into the 5PM march from downtown as it started getting there, and it was even bigger!! The port was shut down, what would normally be dangerous industrial space became the scene of a mass street party, people milling all over.

This was one of the most amazing days in my life. I'm still digesting it. As i got to the BART West Oakland station, a bunch of cop cars were heading towards the port, alarms blowing. I hope everything is OK. Tonight, the Bay Area's ruling elite will not be sleeping as soundly as it is used to, it must be more than a bit worried. Once people taste freedom, it's hard to get them to swallow "normal."

Hey, PM, what a great day, and super report. I posted this over at HA. Cheers!

Yellowrocker wrote:Well 20 seconds was all I could stand to watch.

Spanking works on most kids at 6 years old, but not at 16. I think it creates more rebellion at 16.

Here are my suggestions to other parents of teenagers --

1. Husband and wife need to be together on discipline matters.
2. Think through what behavior you want your teenager to STOP doing.
3. Think through what behavior you want your teenager to START doing.
4. Think through why #2 or #3 matters in their life.
5. Decide (husband & wife together) what sort of punishment is likely to work, and not cause your teenager to run off and join the circus.
6. Work the plan and hope for the best.

In this video, the dad is upset because the daughter is using the internet too much.

Pretend dialogue for a better plan --

Dad- "Your mom and me seriously think using the internet too much is going to cause major problems for you, now as well as in your future. <insert reasoning here> So we are going to limit the time you spend on the internet. We have put controls on the computer which limit your time on it.

Mom- "If you do your chores and maintain good grades in school, then you get xx hours per week. If not, then we cut back on the hours."

Teenage daughter (screaming dramatically)- "I hate your stupid guts!! You never loved me!! As soon as I am old enough I am moving out!! " Then, she thinks to himself "I will just use the internet at my friends house."

Teenage son (listening quietly)- "I totally get it." Then, he thinks to himself "I will make my little brother do my chores and cheat on tests for good grades. I will show my idiot parents who is smarter."

Mom & Dad need to reassure each other. Now is the time to work as a team and not bicker at one another. Also, stay close to the teenager and stick to your guns. If your logic in step #2 or #3 is really that important, keep reinforcing this with your teen.

The parents might seek counseling (maybe even 2 independent counselors) for the parents first. This can have a calming effect for the parents. Counselors would most likely want to involve the teen as well, but this does not always happen.

Don't give up, don't give in to rage.

You can temporarily change behavior with fear but remove the belt and the underlying ethic remains the same. Kids do the right thing because they want to please the parents they love and respect. Hitting any child for any reason doesn't aid attachment so doesn't help a child manage their own behavior. What you saw was sexual. It was about power and control. I would bet there are a lot of skeletons in this particular closet. No teen is an angel. That isn't the point. To even suggest that she somehow deserved it is crazy. I come at this from the perspective of an adoptive and foster parent and I teach behavior management classes. I have a pretty good track record of kids doing well and doing right.

Picasso Moon wrote: ... We need to get past this sort of thinking. Capitalism will end only when all the means of producing our survival needs belong to society as a whole."

One of the moderators will have to jump in here, but basically you can post anything (quotes and links to relevant articles, create a discussion on a particular subject specific to Peak Oil and Collapse, youtube videos, etc.) provided they have something to do with the forum, and are located in the proper sub-forums (i.e. articles about oil, energy, etc. go in "Peak Oil Breaking News," a story or video about environmental destruction would go in "Ecological Doom," and so forth).

Also, a few ground rules to always abide by (again, mods can add to this):

1. No attacking other members personally or threats of violence; heated discussions are good as long as you stay on topic, but attacking other members is forbidden.

2. Stick to the topic at hand; de-railing threads is generally not advisable, if you need to bring up something else it might be best to start a new topic.

3. None of the following: racial or ethical slurs, excessive cursing, pornographic or gory videos, or any offensive content.

Recommend a mod/admin either edit/add to this and move to Forum Freedoms & Laws, since there doesn't seem to be a "rules" thread there. :?

I'm sure I left out a lot, but this should get you started. Basically the 'golden rule' - treat others as you would like to be treated. Play nice. :D

Again, welcome Whisky, and enjoy!

yep - spot on

will make these the new rules as i am not sure what happened to the old ones that pretty much said the same thing.

I'll second this. Earth_Girl's post hits all the important stuff. Welcome to the forum WTF.

From Cooking With Staples Thread. I love plainsman's relationship with cooking and growing, harvesting food!

When my guests really like what they're having for dinner, it doesn't get any better for me.....a pleasure all its own. When I retired early from carpentry I enrolled in culinary school as a hobby and discovered for the first time, the excitement of partnering with other lovers of the art of the table.

As a gardener who's focused on the edible landscape, a whole other, almost spiritual dimension, unfolds before me, an outlook that also, without conflict, embraces a chemistry oriented outlook. I refer to the molecules available in the living communal organism that is the soil, taking on an organized coherent form in my crops, maturing into seeds, or tubers, or roots or whatever the harvest is to be. I am endlessly enthralled by the notion of my produce being prepared into an attractive and tasty dish, consumed by someone whom I like, the molecules actually becoming part of them, their bodies......it's a privilege to do it: grow, harvest, process, cook it up, serve it and sit down and eat it myself with them. I see no conflict with the spiritual and the scientific joys of these processes.

The cycling of nutrients, season after season, is another fascinating consideration. Is there a spiritual manifestation, a patron saint of the compost bins?

If any of this free association makes any sense......

I think I am going to read this post again. And then again. And then again. :P :P :P

This gets nomination for Post of the Day!
