the perspective of the "human" close up shot in this piece would seem to be akin to a leader speaking to the masses - the faces said it all, "oh great one - please bring us rain and manna from the sky for we have not eaten in a month...please save us"!
I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love,
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.

Hi dermot! What is a dermot? Another word? The word? Their word? :D

I haven't yet watched, but I will tomorrow during my cave-time. I kind of understand, i guess, people who are new to doom. whistle, eyes looking around... ahem... me! I'm about a year and a half new.

So I do know the reactions... although mine are just on the fast-track...

I am sooooo intrigued, and I look very much forward to review your video tomorrow.

Re: Peak Oil animation: "There's No Tomorrow"

Not bad. Good style.

First 5 minutes Great.

Story portion kind of falls apart for a while on the "Energy" Section that follows for anyone that actually knows the topics -- but that is mostly because of PCI dogma -- not because of your work at all.

And one tech change if you can fix it -- where there is a pollution output reference "graph" cartoon -- Nitrogen Oxides (typically NO, or NO2 -- or generically NOx) is shown as N2O. Is that what you all meant? Some refs to that for global warming, but I think at that part the topic was pollution, per se? You follow the difference? All fine among friends, but if you want to catch that before declared "all done." for TMI -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen_oxide

But all-in-all fine clear graphics, visually catching and entertaining -- all in all -- Good Work.

Re: Peak Oil animation: "There's No Tomorrow"

I did not detect any drop-off in quality after 5 minutes, none whatsoever!

It's amusing to see someone who thinks the basic content of the video is full of shit still praising it, as if it's all about technique. But no surprise given the commentator. :D

GREAT job, dermot! Good to see you back here.

You can be very proud of it. Good work.
The more bones shown the better! :) ;)
Please Dermot, look at my personal artistic response:

If I could pay the rent while animating my stuff, we would watch the little movie Danse Macabre for Petrocollapse.

My uncle once told me that my cousins really liked me. When I asked him why, he said "Because you treat them like adults."

Everyone seems to want to stay calm and collected-- but we are talking about an unprecedented megadeath. Something that will make nearly everything we do or ever tried to do, seem meaningless.

Glad you used the Brandenburg Concerto. :? ;) :)

Ilargi, 2/24/12.

While the global financial crisis (GFC) [The crisis is far more than "financial," much bigger than a problem of the sphere of circulation. It is a fundamental crisis of the capitalist mode of production] has the shortest time horizon for systemic disruption, the effects of our upcoming peak oil crisis (PO) should never be marginalized. The way I see it, there are three major reasons why:
1) The GFC and PO are inter-connected: systemic deleveraging that is ongoing from the GFC will feed back into energy supply shortages in the future, 2) the energy crisis is likely to make the disruption and devastation from the GFC feel like a walk in the park for billions of people and 3) the awareness of this crisis, and therefore any mitigating responses at large scales, is completely lacking and most likely will never appear until many people have already been priced out of energy access.
The best we can really do right now is tell ourselves and our local communities, physical or virtual, why we have arrived at this dangerous point in history and what we can do to begin protecting as many people as possible from its consequences. The latter is why The Automatic Earth has decided to place so much emphasis on its new Lifeboat section, where people with specialized knowledge and experience can contribute to the community. There is no perfect or even near-perfect way to insulate oneself from these energy risks, but, for those with the available means, the time to start doing so was yesterday.[We can do better than this, but it's a start]
For those who are looking for a very accessible explanation of the peak energy crisis, for your own learning experience or to share with others, the following animated video from the Post Carbon Institute is an invaluable resource (h/t El Gallinazo). It uses simple and effective animations to explain many different aspects of the crisis, ranging from the original formation of our fossil fuel inheritance to its rapid depletion, the concept of energy return on energy invested (EROEI), the inadequacy of "alternative energy sources" to offset net energy declines, the intersection with peak finance and much more. It is only 30 minutes long, so you won't get a ton of in-depth analysis, but it is still a great tool for the uninitiated and initiated alike.

Someone else appreciates you, Dermot. Of course, we know that at least two posters on this forum think that PCI has no credibility. :D

Re: Peak Oil animation: "There's No Tomorrow"

Too many cards in the deck to see the big picture between what if and what is. Sure I would imagine that some areas will suffer greatly and chaos will ensue. However to say that having hope is in error is just taking hope and throwing it away. Now being smart, preparing for it mentality & physically & defending your life when threaten with death is just good common sense. For you see we all are going to die sooner or later.Even the rich and most intelligence with all the power will perish. We are on a cusp of something that could go either way and that is good or it is evil only time will tell.

I loved the animation, dermot! So much information packed into a short period of time, and you made it easy to understand, and also fun to watch! I hope you feel good about having created this masterpiece!I can't wait to see your next one. Well, I can, it will be a few years away?
