Outdoor Gear

I am not sure where to put this new thread for outdoor gear. I am upgrading and replacing a few items. First, I want to talk about tents. 4-season. I usually get my gear at Mountain Equipment Co-op. I don't know if you have that in the USA. Anyways, now roccman has me thinking about the North Face too.

I am looking for a 3 or 4 person, FOUR-Season tent. Anyone have any good ideas? Especially if you're from Canada?

I found this, and I need help. I don't care for diamonds, but this one has me drooling...HELP! (It's $5000)

Re: Outdoor Gear

It is one thing to have outdoor gear, but what is your longterm plans?

What would be the main purpose of the tent? Bug out or Long term? If it is bug out the money would be better spent on a cheaper tent and other preps elsewhere.

Edit: This would be my suggestion.

Re: Outdoor Gear

The hogback looks like a great bug-out tent, super light-weight (just a couple of pounds, approximately), and I really like the fact that it is not bright yellow or any other bright colors. A lot of the camping/hiking tents are so brightly colored, I guess so people can be found if they get into trouble, but I want a camoflaged tent.

So thanks for that, Templar. Also, do you have any recommendations for a longer-term tent as well, again 4-man, 4-season, that is not too heavy? I don't like buying anything that I can reasonably comfortably carry myself.

Re: Outdoor Gear

I found this one at MEC. I like the fact that it can be free-standing, so no having to tie down when there's no wind. But I don't like the fact it is so colored/visible, say, in a forested environment. A little bit heavy for bugout, but might be a good go-between bug-out and base camp situation. I suppose I am looking for flexibility. I already have a super lightweight 3-man tent. What are your thoughts on this one?

It is over 20 pounds, and about $400

Re: Outdoor Gear

Personally, my research has shown Hilleberg to be some of the best tents out there, and lighter than you'd expect for the room you get. They have models that they leave in Antarctica all year round.

Re: Outdoor Gear

.

- I'm far too Scotch to be spending that kind of money on a tent when I could just get some decent tarps and throw-up a teepee if I needed a tent dwelling. Not that I can envision any situation where I would...

- Although, now that I think about it... Might could use one with a remote shop/school out ckloser to the road. Wife doesn't like folks coming all the way back here.
