Nuclear Power Plant Crisis - Critical

edit: News is turning bad by the hour. All workers have been evacuated from the plants. Hearing news that one of the reactors has no containment.
I have moved this to a global announcement. Asking members to stay on top of this and post whatever they can find.

Workers at a nuclear power plant in north-central Japan are having trouble cooling the reactor and authorities have asked nearby residents to evacuate, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said at a news conference Friday.

Japan's nuclear safety agency ordered more than 2,800 people in the area to evacuate following the government's declaration of a state of emergency at the plant.

The quake triggered a power failure and when a backup generator also failed, the cooling system was unable to supply water to cool the reactor. The reactor core remains hot even after a shutdown.

The agency said plant workers were scrambling to restore the water supply. There was no prospect for an immediate success.

The moderator rods are supposed to fall automatically under such scenarios. The fact that they are working at trying to cool it mean the rods malfunctioned (IMHO).

If those rods can't be inserted this will meltdown.

The Dolly Parton memorial near San Onofre is only 20 miles from me. I need to get out of here, I really do.

Re: Nuclear Power Plant Crisis - Nearby Residents Evacuate

Forgive my ignornace, what kind of world impact are looking at if they do have a meltdown over there? I would imagine ton's of radiation being released etc, but is it worse than a nuclear weapon going off? Or will it just burn and release a lot of radiation?
