Bolt-Action .22

Looking at getting my first weapon, just something to practice with and start my "doom arsenal" as it were. Don't have a lot of money right now, but came across this:

Local ad has a JC Higgins .22 bolt-action rifle, in good shape. Holds 18-rounds in a tube magazine, no scope, just a no-frills rifle, looks like the owner took care of it. They're asking $125, and I'm thinking of jumping on it in the next week or so. Anyone heard of this brand? Any advice?

Thanks.

Re: Bolt-Action .22

JC Higgins was a sears or montgomery ward house brand. A bolt action 22 is fine. I have an old Remminton that is the bane of many squirrels and rabbits. Learning to shoot is the important issue and a 22 is perfect.

Thanks Bogey, yes something to practice with is exactly what I'm looking for. Would only use a .22 for defense in a dire situation, if I had nothing else. I've shot my brother's .22 many times and love it, little recoil which is good because I'm not that strong and have a bad back. I just need something basic that's my own, not my brother's. :)

Buy it. Just cleaned mine this afternoon. Hard to beat for practice, picking off unsuspecting small game up to and including whitetail deer (or other equivalently sized varmints, 2 legs or 4).

I apologize for giving you the impression earlier that you are a whiner. That wasn't my intention at all, I am just a firm believer in looking at all the angles, and always believing they are there, and it comes out pretty opinionated sometimes.

Apology accepted Bruce, thanks for the input. :)

Re: Bolt-Action .22

The bolt action .22 is a solid investment, compared to a lever action. Although the lever shoots faster (and is more fun to shoot :D ) the bolt can be reloaded faster with another mag. Just remember, price and quality go hand in hand, if you're considering buying a used gun have a gunsmith check the barrel's wear.

Re: Bolt-Action .22

just about any 22 is a solid investment.

I searched www.backpage.com and saw about a dozen JC Higgins .22 nothing cheaper than $175.
I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love,
For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.

If you don't buy it I will! A .22LR is good for target practice,hunting and defense.Also get a "Brick" of .22LR ammo,about $20 for 500 rounds.Also a cheap scope might help,again about $20.

.

- I dunno what prices are like now. Last time I looked, semi-auto .22 rifles were the cheapest new, which I found odd.

- I loved my old Remington Nylon 66 semi-auto. Now I have a Henry .22 lever that is way better than it has a right to be at the price.

- Every household needs at least one good .22.
