3-M Security Film.

3-M Security film. Anybody have experience applying it to their household glass, picture windows, sliding doors & etc? Is it feasible as a DIY project? What kind of money costs are involved? Where is it available? I live in South Central Nebraska, USA. Slowing an intruder down in the glass covered portions of my house or deterring the flying debris of a mid west thunderstorm or near miss of a tornado, seem very desirable to me, and 3-M Security film applied to my major windows & sliding doors sounds like a practical addition to a layered defense plan. Any insights would be most welcome.

Don't have any experience with it myself, but found the following site just doing a google search

3M Official Site (Residential Film) http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Window_Film/Solutions/Markets-Products/Residential/

Has a cost calculator and a dealer locator by zip code. Good luck! :)

Re: 3-M Security Film.

There was quite a bit of talk about this over at LATOC. From what I remember, folks who'd used it generally found it worthwhile, and possible to install yourself. I'm thinking you'd want to start either from one edge or the middle and flatten it out carefully so you don't get bubbles. Another suggestion from LATOC was to put a small bead of silicone around the edge to help keep the film from getting blown off the window in the event of a big impact.

Re: 3-M Security Film.

I put it in my car on every window,
no idea how well it works,
but by the 2nd window I finally was good at it
it is not that hard to do,
just practice on windows that you don't care to look through that often
PM me for more details if you want more details on how
that is if you can't figure it out on your own

I'm better informed now in the practical way I was hoping for.....a few pointers from people who've used it....I'll take the advice.
